Obituary of Edward Onofrey

Edward R. Onofrey "Eddie O" Age 91. At rest Thursday, March 10, 2011 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home. Born in Joliet to the late George and Mary (Tutko) Onofrey, the tenth of twelve children, he was a life long resident. A WWII U.S. Army Veteran, he served in Nothweiler, Germany and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. Retired from Schiek Motor Express in 1988 following 47 years and serving three generations of the Schiek Family. Past President and former member of the Joliet Grade School Board, District #86 for two decades. Past President of the Joliet Grade School and Joliet High School Band Parents Association. Past President of the Will County Transportation Club. Member of St. Bernard Catholic Church. He was an avid golfer and Cubs fan. Survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Irene (Klein) Onofrey of Joliet; four children, Dr. Bruce (Cynthia) Onofrey, OD of Albuquerque, NM, Tom Onofrey of Shorewood, Nancy Onofrey of Shorewood, and Bonnie (Norman) Swope of Pennsylvania; two grandchildren, Kerry Carlson and Megan Mulcahy; four great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Marion (late Jim) Gist, and Billie (late Dr. Samuel) Klein; his canine companions, Mikey and Bebe; and numerous nieces and nephews. The Onofrey Family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. Sumin Shah D.O. and Dr. Joyce Allen, M.D., caregivers, Carol, Cathy and Nancy, and Joliet Area Community Hospice for their care and compassion throughout this difficult time. Funeral Services for Edward R. Onofrey will be Monday, March 14, 2011 at 9:15 a.m. from the funeral home to St. Bernard Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Interment Woodlawn Memorial Park.
