Obituary of DAVID SAPORTA
DAVID SAPORTA
Died, April 21, 2010, Aurora, Illinois. David Saporta, the third beloved son born to Victoria and Hyman Saporta on November 1, 1926, was a loving brother to Sandro (1919 - 2003), and Abe, who currently resides in Rochester, New York.
Mr. Saporta is survived by three sons, Stephen, John and Victor, as well as their mother, Joanne. Mr. Saporta is also survived by his loving granddaughter, Zoe.
A record-setting swimmer in high school, Mr. Saporta spent the summers of his youth working as a certified lifeguard. After graduation, he went on to attend the Rochester Institute of Technology, and earned an Associates Degree in Industrial Chemistry, which was conferred upon him in June of 1948.
Mr. Saporta began his career with Sandro, his eldest brother, who founded the Great Lakes Plating Company of Detroit, Michigan. Later, he worked as an applied industrial chemist for the Udylite Company.
On August 18, 1960, he married Joanne Kotsiakos of Chicago, Illinois. The couple moved to Elmhurst, where they purchased a home, and raised their family.
After leaving Udylite, Mr. Saporta took a sales position with LeaRonal, Inc., where he worked until he formed his first company, Key Chemical. Key Chemical was the precursor to Vic Supply Company, a company he founded at the age of fifty.
Mr. Saporta named Vic Supply Company in honor of his mother, Victoria. The company distinguished itself by eventually becoming the second largest reseller of electrolytic nickel in the United States. Notably, Mr. Saporta's company also supplied the gold salts used in the process of manufacturing the statuettes presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Mr. Saporta and his wife were generous contributors to numerous charities, including the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago, the Art Institute of Chicago (sustaining members), Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in memory of Mr. Saporta be made directly to the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago, 30 S. Wells Street, Suite 3138, Chicago, IL 60606; (312) 357-4866.
Private family services were held on Friday, April 23, 2010, at Elmwood Cemetery in River Grove, Illinois, and were presided over by Rabbi Charles Rubovits. Arrangements by: Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, Joliet, IL.
