Age 86, of Joliet, passed away Monday, October 5, 2009 at Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center. Born May 26, 1923 to Earl and Edna Sandiford. Retired as a switchboard operator from Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center. She was a loyal member of St. Ambrose Church CCW, Ladies Auxiliary VFW Cantigny Post #367, and a lifetime member of Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Joliet Women of the Moose. She enjoyed playing BINGO, crocheting and especially spending time with her family.
Loving mother of Joanne (Robert) Flagg, Jacqueline (Craig) Goode, John (Elaine) Shields and the late Judith Shields; cherished grandmother of Christina (Michael Tessone) Newcomb, Lori (Dane) Van Hulzen, Susan (Steve) Becker, Julie (Jon) Higgins, Melissa (David) Grimstead, Amanda (Jon) Swearengen, and Jennifer (Kevin) Stevenson; beloved great-grandmother of Emily Newcomb, Jake and Anna Van Hulzen, Julia and Austin Becker, Brynn and Brooke Higgins, Brandon Grimstead, Alexis, Aidan and Aubree Stevenson, and baby Swearengen. Also survived by her sister, Betty (William) Starsinich; brother-in-law, Stephen Popovich; sister-in-law, Lillian (Raymond) Kezerle; brother-in-law, Raymond (Corky) Shields; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceded in death by her husband, John Shields, Jr.; daughter, Judith Shields (age 8); and sister-in-law, Kathleen Popovich.
Funeral Services for Mary E. Shields will be Friday, October 9, 2009 at 9:15 a.m. from the funeral home to St. Ambrose Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Interment Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name to Joliet Area Community Hospice or Provena Foundation-Digital Mammography would be appreciated. Visitation Thursday 3-8 p.m. at:
