Obituary of Frederick VanHam JR
Frederick F. VanHam, Jr.
Age 89. Passed away Thursday, April 9, 2009 at his late residence. Born in Joliet, IL. April 6, 1920 to the late Frederick F. and Marie (nee Weese) VanHam. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he participated in the Battle of the Bulge and the Normandy Invasion, and was the recipient of three bronze stars. He, and others in his battalion, received a citation for their involvement in liberating France. He was a co-founding member of American Legion Post #1997 of New Lenox, Post #1080 in Joliet, the 40 & 8, and the DAV. An engineer for the E.J.&E. Railroad, he retired in 1978 after 37 years of service. After retirement, Fred moved to Port Charlotte, Florida where he enjoyed the weather and life in general; he was a member of the VFW, Knights of Columbus and the Irish American Club in Port Charlotte.
Survived by his children, Mary Ellen (John) Justice, Tom VanHam, Ray VanHam, Doug VanHam, John (Joleen) VanHam, and Mike (Laura) VanHam; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. He will also be missed by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth (nee Ryan) and second wife, Kathleen (nee O'Connor); his son, Frederick III; and his parents.
Funeral services for Frederick F. VanHam, Jr. will be Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 10:15 a.m. from the funeral home chapel to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church for Mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
