Obituary of Mary Tikva

Sr. Mary Wilhelmine Tikva, O.S.F., (1911-2013) Sister Mary Wilhelmine Tikva, OSF died at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, Joliet, Illinois, on January 28, 2013. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the oldest of eight children born to Adam and Mary (Ohman) Tikva. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Michael, Steve, George, Stanley and Peter and her sisters, Katherine and Dorothy. Sister Marie was a treasured member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate (Joliet) for 77 years. Before entering religious life, Sister Mary was a member of Holy Family Parish in Cleveland, Ohio. She graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes Grade School in Cleveland. At the age of 61 years she completed the requirements and received her High School Equivalency Certificate in the State of Illinois, Will County. Sister Mary began her ministry as the seamstress for the Sisters of St. Francis in 1937 and for the next 33 years she sewed hundreds of habits and veils each year for the Sisters. In 1970 she taught clothing classes and worked in the library at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Louisville, Ohio. In 1971 she returned to St. Francis Convent as the receptionist and telephone operator for over 32 years. In 2003 Sister Mary moved into Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home where she continued her ministry of prayer and service to the residents and staff until her death on Monday at the age of 101 years. The wake for Sister Mary will be at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, 1201 Wyoming Avenue, Joliet, Illinois, (Wyoming and Rt. 30) on Thursday, January 31, 2013, from 2:00 - 6:45 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 4:45 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Procession will leave from Our Lady of Angels on Friday morning, February 1, 2013, at 9:00 a.m. The Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville, Illinois.
