Obituary of Morton Barnett

Morton D. Barnett, MD "Mort" Died peacefully April 18, 2013 in Scottsdale AZ. Mort was born April 23, 1938, in Oak Park IL, to the late Ivy and Reginald A. Barnett. He was the beloved husband of Harriet (nee Bernstein); devoted father of Julie (Keith) Kyzer and Dr. Brian (Marisa) Barnett; cherished grandfather of Alyssa and David Kyzer, Matthew, Andrew, and Christopher Barnett, Justin Addison and Abigail Ridgway; loving twin brother of Nancy (late Edward E.) Yalowitz and brother-in-law Eugene (Nancy) Bernstein. Also survived by many special nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues. Predeceased by dear in-laws, Adolph and Sylvia Bernstein; sister-in-law, Elaine (late Gary) Cohen and Eleanor (late Donald) Baker. Mort graduated from Oak Park River Forest High School in 1956, from the University of Illinois in 1959 and from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in 1963. Mort served a medical internship in San Bernardino, California, and a residency in Dermatology at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. He was a flight surgeon in the Air Force, stationed with the 5th Fighter Interceptor Squadron in Minot, North Dakota. He practiced dermatology for 32 years in Joliet and founded Dermatology Ltd., now known as Premier Dermatology. Mort was certified by the American Board of Dermatology, was a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, a member of the Illinois State Medical Society, The Will-Grundy Medical Society, The Chicago Dermatological Society, where he was named practitioner of the year in 1998. Mort was a volunteer at the Will-Grundy County Medical Clinic and the Will County Crisis Line. Mort was President of the Sanctuary Homeowners Association since its inception and a past board member of the Joliet Jewish Congregation. He and Harriet were honored by the Congregation in 2011. In retirement Mort enjoyed constructing scale models which he crafted with great skill. Mort was a lifelong, die-hard Cubs fan. He wanted all to know that his life was lived in the words of the golden rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do for you." But, above all, "You gotta do what you gotta do." Funeral Services for Morton D. Barnett will be held on Monday, April 22, 2013 at the Joliet Jewish Congregation, 250 N. Midland Ave., Joliet where visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until services at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
