Sister Anne Marie Furiel, OSF (1925 - 2013) died at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, Joliet, Illinois on August 25, 2013. She was born in Joliet, Illinois to the late Olga and Thomas Furiel. One of eight children, she was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Louis Sedivy and sisters, Mary Lou Paul, Therese Krutsch, Rosalie Furiel and Sister Verna Furiel, OSF. She is survived by her sisters, Sister Pauline Ann Furiel, OSF and Olga (Edward) Matesevic of Joliet. Sister Anne Marie was a treasured member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate (Joliet) for 71 years.
Before entering religious life, Sister Anne Marie was a member of SS. Cyril and Methodius Parish in Joliet, Illinois. She attended St. Mary's Grade School and St. Francis Academy (Joliet Catholic Academy). Sister Anne Marie earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Music degree from the College of St. Francis (University of St. Francis) Joliet, IL.
Sister Anne Marie (Grace Cecile) began her ministry in the field of education in 1945 at St. Francis DeSales Grade School in Chicago, Illinois. Most of her teaching ministry was in schools and parishes in Illinois, including St. Paul the Apostle, St. Bernard and the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet. In addition to her classroom teaching she served as the Parish organist and music director. From 1954 to 1956 she taught Orchestra and Music Appreciation at St. Francis Academy.
Sister Anne Marie was a music specialist and especially enjoyed working with Senior Citizens. She was the founder and Director of the Joliet Park District's JOYSTERS and the Bolingbrook Park District's RENEWAL NOTES. In 1993 she was presented with the Livingston-Runyan Award by the Will Country Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
The wake for Sister Anne Marie will be at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, 1201 Wyoming Avenue, Joliet, IL, (Wyoming and Rt. 30) on Thursday, August 29, 2013, from 2:00 - 6:45 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 4:45 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Procession will leave from Our Lady of Angels on Friday morning, August 30, 2013, at 9:00 a.m. The Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville, IL.
