I met Winston in the Dominican Republic in 1982. We studied in medical school our basic medical science's together everyday for almost two years. Thereafter we spent two more years almost everyday together studying our clinical science externship in the Cook County hospital system . We both graduated from Medical school and Winston returned to his law practice in Joliet and me to New York for additional medical training. Winston and I communicated several times a week until he convinced me to attend Law school, which I complied and for the past 23 years I have practice law in Florida and my Mentor and Best Friend always directing my path .Winston, always saw the bright side in any situation even when the brightness was barely a glow. He always was kind and generous with everyone he met. His mind was incredible ,He would thick up adventures and travels that we would work together which always made life exciting. Once we flew to American Samoa Pago Pago in the South Pacific to sit down and meet with the chiefs "matu's" in a formal dinner to talk about a potential business venture. Another time we met the chief of the Cherokee Indian nation and attended tribal court on several occasions awaiting to see if we had standing to represent the Cherokee nation for a tobacco claim. During one of the meetings Winston requested the chief to make him and me honorary Indian Chief's, which in tribal court the chief laughed and stated that we both could considered ourselves honorary Indian chiefs from that day on. Since that time I use to joke Winston in private announcing his titles of Lawyer, Doctor and Indian Chief ,he always laughed at that . Winston and Mike involuted me in a project to start,a casino ship business in Florida. We did it from nothing and it was called Tarpon Springs Casino Cruses. The ship was called the Magic Mermaid our phone number was 1-800-yes-cash. Then there was Columbia South American dealing, several real estate dealings , Costa Rica dealings, polybright LED dealings. He started more things which he involved me in that I barely had time to practice law. What a man. As a result of all the adventures not venture but adventures that we did together we communicated regularly. Each time that we met up we use to walk two , three even four hours while we caught up on what was going on in our lives , family lives , friend lives and business. I learned how I wanted to be a father by seeing how Winston treated Tyler and Tiffany both as children then as adults. He was an incredible Dad. I find myself talking to my daughter and giving her the same advice which I saw Winston doing 30 years prior to His children . Winston always did what he said that he was going to do and all my friends , family, business partners and people who we knew enjoyed Winston's Wisdom, friendship ,kindness, advise , jokes, they enjoyed the Man. Winston Famous saying which I am now also, famous for are these words " YOU NEVER KNOW" I find myself saying his saying regularly and each time and warm thought of Winston my friend and mentor is felt within my heart. I love Winston he has influenced my life in ways that are to numerous to count. Since the grandchildren arrived Winston conversations centered on there life's , he loved being a husband, father, son ,brother , uncle, friend and I think his most important title was that of being a grandfather. We all who truly knew Winston will miss him. He was a wonderful man. The world has lost an asset. Heaven has gained an incredible Soul. You will always be in my heart and thoughts until we meet again. Your friend . Nick "Neri" Martinez

My favorite memory of Winston was a story my brother related to me.
Winston was apparently just out of the military and was visiting us in Baltimore. One evening he and Ron went downtown to the "Block" which was a famous street in Baltimore where all the burlesque houses were located. They were walking down this seedy street and Winston heard some footsteps behind him. Winston, assuming the fellow behind him was up to no good, does a 180, raised his arms in a karate position and shouted something like "Don't mess with me. I'm a blackbelt." The poor innocent guy was so shaken by this experience that he ran away in the opposite direction as fast as he could. Why that story has stuck with me for all these years, who knows. But I learned an important lesson from that. Don't mess with Winston Block.

My condolences to Cathy and extended family on the loss of a very special man. He was a wonderful neighbor and a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He adored Cathy and let everyone know it. Watching Winston giving his grandkids tractor rides always put a smile on my face. He enjoyed spending time with his canine buddy Wiley. I will miss most Winston's smile and sense of humor. God bless him.
