Rick, I just found out about Valerie passing from the SIU Alumni magazine. I am so sorry and feel such loss. She was a wonderful person and I will always be glad she was my friend. I always hope you two would visit me at the Home Depot (still there) so now I'll miss her even more. Hope you are doing well. Take care.

You & Val will always be a special inspiration to me that people w/ disabilities can live normal beautiful lives just like everyone else!!! Look to God & He will give U His unbelievable strength & guidance in this difficult time, don't let go of Him, because that's who she's with, He has welcomed her home w/open arm's!
I'm always here for U all. Most Sincerely w/all my heart, Stephanie

2 quick stories:
Val and my wife Pat were suitemates at SIU. Pat asked Val if she needed help to fix her bed. Val told her, it was already made. Pat asked, "how did you do it?" Val answered with my "amazing feet." Val then unmade the bed and remade it showing Pat. AMAZING!
Val and I were eating supper and discussed what we had for lunch that day at Stevenson Arms cafeteria. I said we had "Frankfurters." Val answered, no Vinny I believe we had "Hot Dogs''. We went back and forth for about 5 minutes then busted out laughing, and saying simultaneously, "they are the same thing."

Valerie, you will be always in our prayers and thoughts. We shared both childhood challenges together and the hard work of disability advocacy and journalistic integrity. You earned your accolades the hard way, dear friend. The world benefitted from from presence. And your family and friends feel their loss but celebrate your life .

Dr. & Mrs. Frank Klein posted a condolence

Hearing about Val’s passing was a shock to all of us, and I can't even begin to imagine how difficult this time must be for Rick, Tara, and the entire family. Val’s laughter and optimism are just some of the memories of her that I will always cherish. The world has lost a little of its greatness with Val’s passing, and my wife and I--like all of her family and friends--will miss her very much. My only consolation is that I was lucky enough not only to have known her, but also to have been known as a friend. Heartfelt condolences, Dr. & Mrs. Frank Klein
