Obituary of Jon Johnson
Jon Richard Johnson
Age 78, of Shorewood, IL, and formerly Joliet, IL, passed away peacefully at home, Saturday January 17, 2015.
He was born January 28, 1936 to the late Grace M. (nee Wyman) and John H. Johnson in Minonk, IL where he was raised and attended Minonk High, graduating with the class of 1954. He attended Knox College in Galesburg, IL before joining the U. S. Army and after three years serving in the Army, Jon continued his education at Illinois State College in Normal (ISU) which is where he met his wife while they were both students. He received a Masters Degree in computer science from Penn State University.
A U.S. Air Force retiree, Jon was an educator, having taught at Minonk Middle School before he joined the Army (subsequently transferring to the Air Force) and also teaching at Rose State College in Oklahoma City, OK. He retired from the University of Oklahoma where he was the Assistant Director of Computer Services. Post retirement, he became the IT Director at Joliet Junior College.
In addition to his beloved wife, Carol (nee Otto) of 53 years, he is also survived by two sons, Jeffrey R. Johnson of Indianapolis, IN, and Gregory S. (Masako) Johnson of Tokyo; one daughter, Suzetta L. (Robin) Wilson of Austin, TX; seven grandchildren, Benjamin R. and Emma N. Johnson; Naoya S. and Erica Johnson; Michael A., Stephen T. and Sarah N. Wilson; one sister, Janice Campbell; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Eugene A. Johnson.
As it was Jon's wish, Cremation Rites have been accorded. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Minonk, IL on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. All friends and relatives are invited to gather on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Rd. (at Essington Rd.) Joliet from 3-7 p.m. Private inurnment will take place Friday, January 30, 2015 at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL.
