Sister Anna Marie Metz, OSF
Sister Anna Marie Metz, OSF (1925 - 2015) died at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, Joliet, Illinois, on February 21, 2015. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Louise (Thielen) and Leo Metz. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her brother Frederick of Wheeling, IL, and her sisters Veronica Buetow of Chicago, IL, and Mae Bernacchi of Elmwood Park, IL. Sister Anna Marie was a treasured member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate (Joliet) for 66 years.
Before entering religious life, Sister Anna Marie attended St. Bartholomew Grade School and Foreman High School. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of St. Francis (University of St. Francis) Joliet, Illinois.
In 1952 Sister Anna Marie began her ministry of education in the primary grades at St. Francis Xavier School in Chicago. In 1954 she moved to St. Mary School in Fairfield, AL, to teach in grades 2 and 3. While spending only three years there, St. Mary's became a place that was very dear to her heart. In 1977 she returned to St. Mary's to teach Grade 2 for five years.
Sister Anna Marie also taught in various schools in Illinois, Ohio and Wisconsin. In 1982 she became a remedial reading teacher at Holy Family School in Bayfield, WI. From 1985 until 1987 she did volunteer work in the Will County Jail Library and in 1987 became a tutor in the ESL program at the Spanish Center in Joliet.
In 1999 she retired from the field of education but continued to minister to her community of Sisters in the Joliet area. In 2006 she moved into Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home where she ministered to the residents through her presence and personal interest in their lives.
The wake for Sister Anna Marie will be at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, 1201 Wyoming Avenue, Joliet, IL (Wyoming and Rt. 30) on Thursday, February 26, 2015, from 2:00 - 6:45 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 4:45 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Procession will leave from Our Lady of Angels on Friday morning, February 27, 2015, at 9:00 a.m. The Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville, Illinois.
