Miss Erickson, my first grade teacher who loved all of us as much as we loved her. What fond memories of our years in Elwood. Even after many years of formal education, I recall her as one of the best!

As a new student, at 10 years old, to the Elwood community, I had the pleasure and honor of having Mrs. Burns as my 5th grade teacher. She was a wonderful woman, who will forever, have a special place in my heart!

Mary Jane Burns was an educator that opened the hearts and minds of hundreds of students. She instilled a feeling of true worth and human dignity that would help a student surmount the tragedies of futility. She made each and every student feel that they were somebody. I saw her do this for almost twenty-five years. It didn't matter the age of the student because she taught all grades, and all of her students loved her. I was on staff with her for years. We rode together, started the work day together and ended the work day together. We were friends long before I started at Elwood. I saw her the day after her most recent birthday at her home. We had a great visit. I loved her, and I will miss her so very much.

Mary Jane and I were teaching partners. She taught 6th, I taught 5th grade home room. Mary Jane always had a smile and made everyone feel special and happy. I will miss her gentleness and wisdom. She was like an angel on earth.

My most sincere and loving sympathies are extended to the family of Mary Jane, at this most difficult time. She was a wonderful friend, and a very special teacher to all first graders attending Elwood school where I met her, as I was the Secretary of that school. I have many memories that will be with me always, of her kindness and love for all who knew and loved her.

My thoughts and prayers to Mary Janes's family. She was an amazing teacher and we have shared Christmas cards to this day. But even more than who she was as a teacher she was one of the best people I have ever known in my life. rip
