Kay led a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, children, and fun.  She was born to Ralph and Marie on September 29, 1928, growing up in the St. John Catholic School community.  Kay and her sisters, Jeanne and Rita, were commonly known as the “Birkey Girls”.  After graduating from St. John’s Grade School, she attended St. Francis Academy and went on to the original St. Joseph School of Nursing.  Kay was a nurse at St. Joseph Hospital and then met the love of her life, her husband Henry “Hank”, and they were married in 1950.  And that was the beginning of the next chapter in her life.

Kay had nine children and then went back to work in 1975 at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, doing what she did best, taking care of people.  She was special in that she loved everyone and was always there with a smile when you needed her.  Kay was a Eucharistic minister for many years with Hank at Holy Family Church.  She worked many Saturdays organizing the annual rummage sales and ham dinners, and she never let it interfere with raising her family.  Multitasking started with our Mom.  She loved crossword puzzles, weekends at Braidwood Recreation Club, and spending time with her family, as she put it, “we were her retirement plan”.  She was known to move meal times around to watch the Cubs and Jeopardy with her son Doug.  We will miss you Mom, “Love you to the Moon and Back”
