Dr JD Wright posted a condolence
Saturday, March 30, 2019
I first met Dr Al Ray in 1980 when I joined the medical staff at the then St Joseph's Hospital in Joliet. Besides being a fine physician, he was always a friendly and positive person. He was a true leader and led mostly by example and with a keen insight into medical and hospital issues. He was not only heavily involved in his work and hospital committees, but he felt strongly of the need to help out in the community with his special gifts. He was an integral part of the driving force that made the Will-Grundy Free Medical Clinic a reality, a medical facility which is still functioning more than thirty years later. He and his beloved wife Kay devoted countless hours to the clinic over the years, even after his retirement from his chosen field of anesthesiology.
He always had a kind word for people, even those with whom he disagreed. His presence in a tense committee meeting helped others to tone down their strong feelings and usually led to some progress with the difficulties at hand.
My heart goes out to his family who have suffered a terrible loss, but Dr Al Ray will be greatly missed by all others who knew him as well. He and his legacy will not be forgotten.

Dr. Ray was a true gentleman and a kind soul. I have known Al and his family since I was a child - singing in the church choir with Jeff, while my mother sang with Kay, and my sister was friends with Kathryn. I have experienced more acts of kindness and examples of the way to be a true gentleman from Dr. Ray than I can count. I recall specifically when my father had a brain tumor and was away at the Mayo clinic for surgery during Christmas, and the Rays hosted my sister and I and made us feel so welcome and comfortable sharing Christmas with them. Dr. Ray and his wife Kay have raised a wonderful family and the world is a better place thanks to them. My deepest thoughts of sympathy go out to one of my best friends, Jeff, and the entire Ray family for losing such a strong father and pillar of the community.

Freda called me about Al’s homegoing. I knew the Ray family when they were at First Street Methodist in Macon, Ga., and grew to love them all and they still have a special place in my heart. May God grant you all peace and love.

I will forever remember his warm smile, big, beautiful laugh and world-class sense of humor, and his stately presence. He was bigger than life when it came to giving to and for others. To me, he was the true essence of God's love for us on earth, an inspiration beyond words. What a gift he was to us. Wishing you, his beautiful family, strength for the coming days.
