I first met Will or Willoughby, never Robert because that was the military way, in Schweinfurt, Germany, June 1961. Will, Raymond Schneider, Raymond Vial and myself all worked in division headquarters and quickly became a foursome.
Will was assigned “Publications”, where he was responsible for distribution of hundreds of Army regulations. His office was in the basement of headquarters, ours were on the third floor. Will nicknamed his office the; “Dew Drop Inn”; which became the hang out for the four of us. Will and Vial were very entertaining always debating; sports, military subjects and cows. That’s right cows, Vial was in love with the milk cows he raised on his folks farm. He took a lot of harassment for having pictures of cows on his wall locker. We played a lot of “Hearts” and always ganged up on Vial, because that was the only way the rest of us could win once in a while. Whenever we had free time we would meet in Will’s office spending endless nights and weekends building lifelong relationships!
What I remember most about my incredible friend was he always treated me with respect and made me feel important! Will, you will be sorely missed … keep the lights on for me. Say hi to Cheryl, Vial, and Dottie.
Your friend forever,
Ron Woodworth
“Woody”
