Grandpa,
It's tough writing this knowing that it partially an acceptance that you are no longer with us, however we all know that you have moved on to the next stage of your life, and now watch over us with all the other angels and saints in heaven. I am glad that your soul is at rest.
All of us in Texas wish we could have spent more time with the family up in Illinois. I always enjoyed coming up, and staying at the big house. Grandma would always give us delicious breakfasts, and you would spoil us with the ever-present powdered donuts, and use of your TV so that we could have a rare chance to watch cable television.
Your generosity never ceased all those years that you allowed us to stay with you (even when you moved), and give us the opportunity maintain our ties with the rest of the family. You always took good care of us, and I know that's a testament to your character.
God Bless,
Matt

I have many fond memories of Grandpa. Whenever we visited him in the ‘90s and early ‘00s we would stay in the attic of the old house where my mom and her siblings grew up. Making the annual trip to Illinois was always special, and the house seemed mysterious and cool. It had a waterbed, a housecat (Bigfoot!), an organ and pine trees. These were all novel experiences for my kid self. Enough about the house!
And there was Grandpa Carlock. I remember his qualities, his personality. He was quiet, strong, and kind, with a wry humor my long-winded nature enjoyed but could never match. I got to know him from his stories but also his fridge magnets and singing electronic trout. Good food, too, from the meals we shared. When I got older, he became my confirmation sponsor, which conferred some extra dignity to an already momentous occasion. Grandpa was a person of honor and conviction, and so he was just the man for the job.
I am lucky to have known him and will continue missing him and loving him in a muddle for a long, long time.

Hello everyone,
I am sorry I cannot be with you all during this time, as we all remember Francis Carlock. He was many things to each of us--a father, husband, friend, and, for me, grandfather; but above all, we each knew he was someone with humility. He had a kind, humorous heart; and a quiet but strong sense of empathy and concern for others. I remember the memories we all shared together with him during family gatherings; when I picked cherries from the trees at his home, when he showed me how to sharpen a pencil with a knife so I could write, and when we all learned how to fish one summer at his lakehouse. These memories now have a bittersweet nostalgia to me, but never fail to still comfort me on a quiet afternoon. The happiness of these memories, I believe, are perhaps his means of bringing comfort to us, as he watches over us now from heaven. I hope we can each take care and find solace during this time, to reach out to each other, but never forget that he is at peace now and will always remain in the hearts and minds of those that knew him.
I love you Grandpa.
-Meagan Coffer, and the Coffer family.

Jackie, Sandy, and family,
So hard to put into words all that it meant to me to know Mr. Carlock was out there, caring about us, no matter how hard Jackie and I tried to be forward-thinking and even take some risk on. Every single time Jackie and I walked out the door on Eastern and every time my family and I left the Breakfast with Santa event, his farewell was the same, "Be careful." At first in my teen years, I think I heard it as a kind of warning to me to be careful, like I was a bit of a dangerous friend for his little girl. [Very few people had ever thought of me as a potentially dangerous girl, so it was a little exciting and intimidating at the same time]. As the years wore on, I recognized it for what it really probably always was, but definitely as it became - that he loved us. And that he expected we would care for ourselves as if we were loved...
At the service yesterday, when I kept seeing all those fish! I realized that I never saw him fish, so I don't know exactly what that joy looked like on his face, but I saw him mow the lot next door to his house on Eastern, carefully navigating through his trees, hurting none of them. I like to imagine that his love of trees was probably akin to his love of muskie. The look of caring concern and delight on his face doing that frequent job of caring for those trees, is an image that will be with me always.
On a couple of overnights, I realized he also loved when Mrs. Carlock let down her hair at the very end of the day preparing for a good night of sleep. Never heard him talk about it out loud, but he didn't need to. There was a deep love in his eyes that needed no words. Good thing, too, because he really didn't seem to like to use more words than absolutely necessary so far as I could see! Thank goodness Mary Ann was ready to fill in the silences with such openness and sharing of the Carlock family love when I was around with Jackie, at least on the occasions when we were not giggling non-stop.
After Mary Ann's shockingly too early passing, he showed such incredible quiet strength by finding a way to love and partner again. How exactly did such a quiet guy manage to search out and find a second love so special? I saw such deep love, pride, and wonder in his eyes when he was with Sandy, never more than on their wedding day. Again, I never heard him say it. He lived it and showed it in his eyes. Their partnership was far more than companionship; to me they embodied growing older together and not forgetting how much they liked each other as they did it.
I will so miss my friend's rock solid Dad. I wish true comfort and peace for all of his loved ones (and, being he was so good at loving, there are so many!). God now has him in the Palm of His Hand. Go in peace, Francis Carlock. Your work here is now done, and your family will carry on your legacy of quiet love and spread it far and wide.

DearSandy, John, Mary, Jim, Scott, and Jackie,
Uncle Francis was such a good guy as far as I can remember. He made us so welcome when we were kids. I remember Fishing with Scott and Uncle Francis at bass and gill, then later in life when I saw him how we would talk about fishing. He also stayed close to my mother all these years and that made her so happy, she would always tell me after she visited or spoke with him. Glad I was able to see the virtual service and say goodbye, Love you all, Kirk

Too many wonderful memories to count...Sunday afternoons at 401 Farrell Road, sliding down the hill, swimming in the pool no matter how cold the water, Uncle's cherry scented pipe smoke, a canoe ride with Uncle at Bass and Gill, and my kids remember the 'candy drawer' on Eastern Ave. Will always remember the very special and wonderful times!!
