I’m so sorry to hear of Mr Springer’s passing. Mr Springer was my PE teacher as well as my Drivers Ed Coach - as he called it. I was a terrible driver, every time we got in the car he would say, “ok, let’s go out there and hit every pothole there is.” He was such a funny, patient and kind man. He moved about with such a calm confident energy. I remember he always spoke so highly of his wife and children. Mr Springer tried to always instill life lessons wherever he could. There are few teachers that make real impressions on their students, these teachers, we remember for the rest of our lives. Mr Springer was one of those teachers. His family, friends and loved ones are in our thoughts and prayers.

God has chosen a wonderful man! He will be missed until we meet again. He joins Al, Lloyd, Joyce, Pat, Dave and Dan on my staff. Rod and Dale OC came to teach on my staff after driver education changed at the Catholic schools. It was in the days of students paying towel fees in physical education and both of these guys were so stressed out with the procedures. Think one of them went to the hospital! What a way to start a great Joliet Central career! They soon adapted and Rod, with the other guys, spent much time in the teachers’ back room during break time having lots of laughs. Then there were those days that Rod would meet me in the hall and ask to talk. Yes, Chris was expecting again! What a great Springer clan! Then there were those end of school year days when the four younger kids came with him and played in the gym. They bombarded the office to get equipment and went flying off. A whirlwind had hit for sure, all the while Rod laughing! Lastly, when it was time to evaluate Rod in driver education behind-the-wheel he would always choose the worst two students to drive that day! He thought he could unnerve me! One day we ended up on the curb perpendicular to the street and he was calm, collected and smirking the whole time!
So many memories. And, Rod was the most laid back person I knew and very thoughtful. I loved him dearly.

Rod was a young man born to teach. The kids loved Mr.Springer. I never received one referral from him. Rod was a outstanding coach in football and wrestling. Tough [tough, and I mean tough] but fair-although we almost had to pull his pants off during football games and wrestling matches. He fought hard when he was playing and every ref from Plainfield to Springfield kept a close eye on Rod when he was upset.
Tom Calhoun,OC and now Rodney Springer I believe the angels needed some help in heaven. I’m running out of great Men who helped young men and women to exceed the expectations. I am very proud and tremendously sad that they were called to duty in heaven. These men will be greatly missed on earth but the young people they helped become outstanding young men and women become outstanding adults and will help develop a new core of steelmen who will be proud, hard working and great citizens from these men called to duty in heaven. I will miss so much-you made my life’s joy with your leadership and diligent intellect with students. I will miss Rodney very very much-these men were my dearest friends. I will cry tonight as I review their friendship.
Thanks guys,Coach Mack. Go Steelmen! bHt9E

Mr. Springer was one of the best teachers at JT Central. He genuinely cared about us. I can remember a countless number of times that he would let girls sit out when we didn't feel well. He understood that at certain times we had things going on with our bodies that we could not control, and he sympathized with us. I appreciated that gesture of kindness. Than you, Mr. Springer. Rest in peace.

I've had the pleasure of knowing Rod for over 40 years. You cannot find a nicer person. All you have to do is look at the fine family he and Chris have raised. I have had the luck to meet a few of them during my many years at the golf course. He taught all four of my children to drive. You'd be hard pressed to find a former student who didn't like him. Rod will be sorely missed. RIP my friend.

Chris and all the Springers - I am sure over the years you have heard countless stories from past students who loved Rod. I think I was in his very first class at SFA and I can honestly say - he was my very favorite teacher and a great guy. I used to babysit for Matthew and Mark when Mark was just a baby. I would occasionally run into Rod and Chris and he never forgot - Well I guess I wouldn't let him. The last time I saw him in the Jewel we laughed as he asked about me and my friends. My Mom worked with him at Central and when my Dad passed away he helped her at 50 get her drivers license. He was a kind soul. I'm sorry for your loss of Rod as it must leave a hole in your family. I hope all the wonderful memories and love for him will give you all strength.
Class of 75 SFA fondly called him hot Rod - God's Speed Hot Rod!

Oh, Mr. Springer. You were the first PE teacher I had freshman year at JT Central(1982) and the last one when I was a senior (1986.) I loved having you for driver’s ed at West (1984.) You were my favorite PE teacher..always so much fun! My favorite memories of you were “sitting” by my simulator during driver’s ed yelling, “Maureen, look out! Great, we’re dead.” And during pickle ball senior year, you’d throw the plastic balls at me while I was in a match to throw off my game (all in good fun), and you never marked me down for not being in the correct gym uniform. Always so kind and ready for a laugh! Rest In Peace, Mr. Springer. You were one of the good guys!
