Those wonderful days before GPS
Goepper would want (wants) me to share one last story. It's the late 1960's, I am home for the summer while going to college and Goepper is working full time for the U. S. Postal Service delivering mail in the Romeoville area which is only a few miles from my parents' home on High Road in Lockport.
I am working part time during the summer so on some days I am available to have Goep visit me. Goep is delivering mail in one of those jeep like USPS trucks. So, Goep being Goep, by racing through his route turns a 8 hour work day into a 6 hour work day and goofs off for 2 hours.
So, usually a couple days during the week Rick would race his jeep to my house bringing his sack lunch and we would eat lunch together usually watching "Jeopardy" or if hot enough we would hop in my parents 4 foot above ground pool.
Here is where the story gets interesting. After a few weeks of this Goepper's boss starts tailing him wondering where he disappears to in the middle of the day. So, we set up a mechanism where we would leave our garage door open on the days Goep was coming over. On many occasions Goep's boss who was tailing him was just minutes behind Goepper wondering where and the hell he was disappearing to.
We had a gravel driveway and many times Goep's boss was only 1/2 mile behind Goepper. On some occasions the dust from our driveway had barely cleared when Goep's boss came whizzing by our house looking all over for his employee. You have to visualize this. Goep enters our driveway about 30 mph, hauls his jeep into our garage, slams the door shut, runs behind the garage and his boss blows by our house on High Road wondering what happened to Goep??
Well, this continued all summer and Goep was never caught.
My mom was just finishing up raising 7 kids and loved Goep as we all did, and just observed all this with a smirk on her face. Fast forward 30 years and my mom is talking face to face with Goep's old boss and somehow Goepper's name comes up. Then, and only then, did Goep's boss find out where the hell Goep was disappearing to all that summer and they both laughed and laughed.
Just picture Goep raising dust clouds as he enters our driveway, hopping out of his vehicle and slamming our garage door shut. That's Goep for you!! What a character!

Debbie and Family,
We are deeply saddened and shocked to learn of Goep's passing. I drove a tanker at Texaco with his dad, and Goep and I used to play catch at the Texaco Sales Terminal picnics, in the early sixties. Having Goep as a friend, you couldn't ask for a better one. The numerous and wonderful memories that you have, hopefully will help in easing the pain of such a tragic loss. We wish to extend our most sincere sympathies and will keep all of you, in our prayers.

Goep and I worked together a couple of summers in the late 60's at the Texaco terminal on New Avenue in Lockport. We had an ongoing contest. Whenever we were unloading a train boxcar full of boxes of Havoline Motor Oil or a truck full of 55 gallon drums of oil neither one of us wanted to unload the last box or barrel. I still remember the last truck we unloaded together containing 55 gallon drums. I was daydreaming toward the end and I looked around and Goepper had disappeared. I looked toward the front of the truck and there it was the last 55 gallon drum of oil. Got me Goep!
The last two Labor Day holidays my brothers (John and Royce) competed against Goep and me at Big Run Golf Course in Lockport. With his new knees and hips and who knows what else, my brothers and I referred to Rick as the 6 million dollar man. We played skins and Rick, who had a swing like Matthew Wolff or Jim Furyk of the PGA tour, carried me through that 18 holes and we won. I am so happy that I contacted Goep and we could spend some quality time together again.
As we all know, Goep was as tough as they come, but such individuals must portray such a persona to protect their loving and vulnerable hearts. Such a man was Goep. On the outside he was "Dirty Harry", but on the inside he was a Saint.
Goep LIVES as there is no death! As Eckhart Tolle says: "Death is not the opposite of Life. Death is the opposite of birth."
I send to all well wishes in the Love and in the Light of the One Infinite Creator. Mac

Rick and I went back to the 1960s when we played trombone together in the Joliet Central band, played rec basketball and football, and did goofy things with our parents' cars. My cousin Carl, Rich Nichols, and Terry Beaudry were some of the best buddies I ever had. As the youngest guy in the bunch, I was lucky to have Goep always looking out for me. May God bless Rick's family.

I was never a close friend of Ricks. But I knew him since we were kids. We played baseball, softball and basketball together and against each other. I considered him a good friend! He always had a smile on his face, and was fun to be around. We would share grandkid stories, over beers and I felt he knew how proud I was of mine. I know he was just as proud of his grandkids, as well as Amy & Tracy....I would joke with him how his plows were rusting, when there wasn’t much snow, I did plow with him one year. I will miss him like so many other’s will. My heartfelt condolences Debbie, girls and families. sincerely: Vince Driscoll
