Dad, it’s been a while since you died. I didn’t speak at your funeral I really didn’t know how that would go and honestly I wanted to listen to stories about you more than share my own. I realize that in doing so I deprived everyone of the immense impact you had on my life. I didn’t give you your flowers then so I will do it now. You were a really good dad. I still remember you driving me to football practice when I was in junior high and how you would always watch from a distance. Whether behind the backstop at the junior high or up on the hill behind the field of dreams when I was in high school. I will always remember what you told me my freshman year the first day of football practice. You put your hand on my shoulder bad and said “play where they put you.” In that moment you made me realize that I was there to be a part of something bigger than myself. I did. I remember that you never missed a game or event Janah or I had. I remember a playoff game I had when you were I. Washington. You flew back that day and were on the sidelines watching quietly. I didn’t expect you to be there but you were. You were always there. You were patient even though I caused a lot of frustration for you.
Your work ethic was second to none. You prioritized us even when working long hours. I knew you were strong but now that I am working similar hours I realize I didn’t have a clue how strong and responsible you really were.
Thank you for taking Janah and I to frosty tips when we asked. Sorry we left out that mom said no. Thanks for showing us what parenting looked like by asking us “if we asked mom” every other subsequent time we asked you to take us.
I will never forget you and mom taking us to six flags, Santa’s village and on all the church trips. Thank you for driving me down to Arizona. I’m glad we got to see you at the University of New Mexico with you. I remember how happy you were to be back there.
You were one of those dads every son or daughter wants and I regret that I did not appreciate or realize just how lucky I was to have you as my dad. I thought you’d live to be 90. I wish you did. I miss you all the time. I love you Dad.

We were saddened to hear of Gary's rapid departure to the church triumphant. His easygoing manner, wry smile and servant heart are things to be treasured by all of us. Having moved to Florida we did not make his memorial service but trust that it was not only a tribute to a life well lived but an invitation to all to receive the gift of eternal life. Gary probably did not realize the impact he had on others but the Lord used him with so many people in so many ways. Praise the Lord !

I worked with Gary at Nicor for as long as I can remember. Whenever I would see Gary's van in the parking lot at work I knew I was going to have a good day. I would always enjoy the opportunity to talk to him and catch up. Everyone at Nicor truly loved Gary. I never knew anyone to be as efficient at their job as Gary was. Anytime anyone needed anything he would make sure it was done immediately. I admired Gary as not only a coworker but as a husband, father, son and friend. He will be sorely missed by many.

Dear Dawn, Andrew, Janah, Adam and all family of my brother in Christ, Gary. Marsha and I lift you all up to Christ Jesus in these times. “A friend loves at all times.” (Proverbs 17:17a) This verse best describes the faithfulness of Gary in my life. Through my darkest valleys and highest mountains, Gary was there. “Faithful” - in a word - best describes Gary. As Jesus said: “All men will know you are my disciples if you love one another.” Gary lived what he believed in his love and Christ-like-ness.

Words do not exist to express how stunned I am with our loss of one of humanities very best. I coached Gary in wrestling at JJC; he had God-given talent. So sad to hear the news of Gary’s passing. His passion for life and for our Lord Jesus is great. Gary’s involvement with the body of Christ has always been diverse, from young people to grown ups to performing arts and leadership. In my memory, and I am sure in countless others’, Gary is one of the most likable personalities we have ever known. God bless his memory in our hearts and his example of faith in action for our lives.

In this time of profound sadness, Shirley and I offer our heartfelt condolences and prayers to Dawn and family, and to all of the Damiani family. Gary was truly a terrific person and a great friend.
All of us who were fortunate to have known Gary will always remember his friendly, outgoing personality that came through in all aspects of Gary's life. Gary consistently made others feel like they were the most important person in the room.
Over the past fifty years, I have dropped by D & D's many times, particularly on days when Gary was helping out. The one thing that has stayed the same over all of these years at D & D's is the positive, welcoming atmosphere that reflects a love and passion for family and friends. I have always felt fortunate to be considered a friend of Gary and his family.

Back when Janah and my daughter Jen were about sixteen, us Dads decided to take the girls on a date so they knew how a boy was to treat them. It was a nice Italian restaurant where we opened the car doors, slid out the table chairs and showed other gentlemanly traits, at least for a while. It wasn’t long before our Classy treatment went bad. Gary immediately after being seated unscrewed the top from the jar of Parmesan Cheese and drank it down like it was a glass of water, of course I couldn’t stop laughing, especially as he puffed out two extremely dry words; more please. Anyways, after eating a great meal, us men needed to use the rest room and the girls stood waiting in the hallway while we did. Just then an elderly woman slid up to them and whispered, “ I’ve been watching you two the whole time, you don’t like those guys do you? Bewildered, they responded, “ew, those are our Dads”. We all had a great laugh! Gary my friend, you are one Class Act to everyone who knew you. You treated everybody with respect and made them feel like you knew them forever. I’m proud to call you my friend and will miss you this side of heaven.

Dear Dawn and family,
You and Gary are part of our family. This past Sunday morning we cried and prayed together as we gathered for class via zoom. The previous week Gary was so full of joy and brought the presence of the Lord with him as he broke into song after we read Isaiah 12. I know Gary's life echoed the words of Isaiah in this chapter of praise. " Surely God is my salvation. I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord is my strength and my song." Today Gary is leading heaven's choir, smiling, waving and worshipping.
We continue to lift you up in prayer. May you feel the love of Jesus holding you close at this time.

Gary treated me with kindness and fatherly wisdom from the first time I met him. Countless times he welcomed me in his home when I came to visit Andrew. To this day, I still have clippers and the lunch he gave them to me in when I had a big interview for a job that week. That was at least a decade ago or more. And I never forgot how willing he was to just help me prepare for a chance at a better career move for my family. That man embodied love and service to others. And knowing him and his children in my life will always be counted as one of my greatest blessings. My heart and love go out to everyone who were blessed by his spirit.

The topic of our conversations can be anything from what's currently trending to something that took place in the past.
We hook up on music. It seems our taste of music is the same .... when we talked about a certain song, not only you knew the current artist, but who wrote it and who turned it down. Your knowledge is amazing and I have to admit, I pick up a lot of info from those conversations.
I have fond memories of you. I will keep these memories alive as long as I can.
