Obituary of Roland C. Reed
Roland C. Reed, age 82, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 8, 2021, at Joliet Area Community Hospice surrounded by the love of his family. Roland was born on July 24, 1938, the son of the late Albert Arthur and Virginia Chloe (nee Sloan) Reed. He was raised and educated in Sorento, IL. He was a graduate of Litchfield High School and attended Southern Illinois University. Roland proudly served in the United States Marine Corps.
Roland retired in 1997 after several dedicated years as an operator from UNO-VEN Refinery in Lemont, IL. For his encore career, he enjoyed working at the Heritage Bluff Golf Course for the past 18 years where he was affectionately known as “Huggy”. He was an active member of Mission Bible Church in Minooka and the SAC Club in Romeoville.
Roland was a true sports guy. He played for the Pittsburg Pirates in their farm league for two years, always enjoyed watching any type of sporting event, was an avid golfer, and loved to watch old western movies. Roland was always a joy to be around and always had a smile on his face.
Roland is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Kathleen V. Reed; his children, Phyllis (Paul) Drdak, Penny (Sam) Greco, and Joel (Wanda) Vath; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren, with two more on the way; and his sister, Marge Deffenbaugh. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
He is preceded by his two sons, Spencer Vath and Dennis Vath; his parents; and his siblings, Gerald Reed, William Reed, Wesley Reed, and Gene Reed.
Visitation for Roland C. Reed will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2021, from 4:00 p.m. until the time of service at 7:00 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Rd. (at Essington Rd.), Joliet, IL. In accordance with the Illinois guidelines, face masks are required and social distancing will be observed.
As it was his request, cremation rites will be accorded following the services. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name to Morning Star Mission, 2221 W. Jefferson St, Joliet, IL 60435, or Wounded Warriors Project would be appreciated.
