Josephine Goron

Obituary of Josephine Goron

Josephine "Jo" Goron (nee Mahkovec) Passed away suddenly on June 17, 2008 in Jackson, Michigan after a brief illness. Born July 25, 1918 in Joliet, Illinois, she resided in Crest Hill, Illinois until 2004. She is survived by her daughter Joyce (Jack) Fremeau of Jackson and daughter-in-law Jody (late Eugene) Goron of Shorewood, Illinois; her grandchildren Scott (Lidija), Brian (Molly), Joseph, and Michael Fremeau, Adam and Andrew Goron; and her great-grandchildren Colin, Owen, and Audrey Fremeau. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Shirley (late Ralph) Mahkovec, Dorothy (late Edward) Makovic, Florence Goron, Clara Kovalcik, Ray and Dolores Goron, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, dear and longtime friends from Joliet and Crest Hill, and special friends at Countryside Retirement Community in Jackson. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank J. Goron; her son Eugene F. Goron; her parents Frank and Anna Mahkovec; six brothers Frank, Edward, Ralph, Stanley, John, and Gus (late Mary); two sisters, Helen (late Paul) Dufour and Ann Mahkovec. Josephine was a lifelong member of Saint Joseph Church in Joliet, Illinois, most recently a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Jackson. She was involved in many civic and social activities over the years-- member of KSKJ St. Francis de Sales #29; active in the Slovenian Women's Union Branch 20, first as captain of the SWU championship drill team, later as branch officer; Chaney School PTA board member; an advocate for the incorporation of the city of Crest Hill; one of the founders of the Crest Hill Women's Civic League; a fund-raiser as part of the Willing Workers for Trinity School; the inspiration behind and original director of the Crest Hill Lassies girls drill team; and proud member of both the Crest Hill Veterans' Memorial and Crest Hill Police Memorial committees. Her greatest joy, however, came from being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. In light of Jo's sweet, loving, and generous spirit, an act of kindness to a friend or stranger would be a most fitting way to honor her; and in lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Saint Joseph School Fund in her memory would be greatly appreciated.
