Obituary of Vera Mae Close
Vera Mae Close, age 84, of Shorewood, passed away Friday, April 22, 2022 at Sunny Hill Nursing Home of Will County, with her loving family by her side.
Born December 2, 1937 in Pontiac, she was the daughter of Carl and Ollie (Shoop) Pulliam. She grew up on the family farm and was a graduate of Odell High School. For 35 years, Vera worked as a bus driver for Troy Community Schools.
Vera was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who participated in all of her grandchildren’s activities. She loved gardening and canning, and also enjoyed camping and going to craft shows.
She will be remembered for her unconditional love for all her family, her kindness, and her willingness to help anyone and everyone. Her love for Elvis music and her beloved dog, Taffy, will also never be forgotten.
Surviving are her children, Cheryl (Jim) Confer of Joliet, Calvin (Daryl Burian) Close of Wesley Chapel, FL, James (Cheryl) Close of Shorewood, and Cindy (Steven) McPhail of Channahon; 15 grandchildren, Christopher Confer, Jim (Kara) Confer, Amanda (Larry) Brooks, Jill (Mike) Biggs, Kristi (James) Kennedy, Jeremy (Jovan) Close, Andrew Close, Jake Close, Jenalee (Tim) Jones, Anthony Burian, Emily Burian, Tony McPhail, Mike McPhail, Melissa (Tony) Jacksa, and Clorissa McPhail; 19 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Rose Pulliam; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas E. Close (2001), and one brother, Harold Pulliam.
Vera's family would like to thank her caregivers, Sandy, Marylou and Shirley, and the Hospice caregivers, Jen, Jo and Greta, for the loving and compassionate care they provided her.
Visitation for Vera Mae Close will be held Monday, April 25, 2022 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Road, Joliet. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 26, 2002 at 10:00 a.m., at the funeral home. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
