Obituary of Raymond Ralph Schwenn, Sr.
Raymond Ralph Schwenn, Sr. died on January 21, 2023, in his Shorewood Glen home surrounded by his loving family.
Ray was born on April 21, 1942, the son of Charles and Marion Hill Schwenn in Chicago, Illinois, where he grew up in the 80th Western area. Following high school, Ray entered the United States Army serving during the Viet Nam war. Following his service, he returned home and married his sweetheart, Sherry Lynn Boyd, on October 1,1966 and raised 3 children. Ray was a service technician for General Electric. He also served as a volunteer fireman for twenty-three years for the unincorporated area called Garden Homes serving as fire chief for eight of those years. In 1997 they moved to their lakeside home that he and Sherry built on Sisters Lake, Michigan, moving back to Illinois, in 2020 to be nearer to their family.
Ray is survived by his wife Sherry; his daughter, Laurene (Robert) Gonzales of Merrionette Park; his sons, Ray Schwenn Jr. of Joliet and David (Robin) Schwenn of Homer Glen; grandchildren Megan (Kyle) Royce, Jesse (Alexandra) Gonzales, Timothy Gonzales, Kevin (Anna) Schwenn, Shawn Schwenn, Great-grandchildren Elizabeth (Ellie) Gonzales and Jesse Gonzales Jr., brother Charles (Denise) Schwenn and numerous nieces and nephews, besides his beloved dog, Shadow.
Ray’s memorial service will take place on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at the Fred C. Dames Funeral home located at 3200 Black Rd., Joliet. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. with the service to follow. Burial will be in the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery at a later date. A memorial has been established for Lightways Hospice and Serious Illness Care.
