Obituary of John S. Vershay

John S. Vershay, age 87, passed away peacefully at his home in Crest Hill on Sunday, April 28, 2024. John was born in Joliet on February 10, 1937 to the late John P. and Evelyn (Brozovich) Vershay, and has been a lifelong Crest Hill resident. On May 21, 1961, John married Nadine Dagon, and the two were married for 26 years before her passing in 1987. John was very active in his hometown of Crest Hill. He was a member of the first Crest Hill Police Department, and has served as an alderman up until his passing. He was also a member of the Crest Hill Lion’s Club, the Croatian Cultural Club, and the Senior Citizen’s Association. He was an avid enthusiast of antique cars, owning his own Lincoln Zephyr and belonging to the Chicago Thunderbirds and the Joliet Antique Auto Club.

John is survived by his children, John J. (Tamara Roberts) Vershay, Christine (Donald) Vershay-Hall, and Tammy (Christopher) Wisniewski; his granddaughter, Molly Nadine Vershay; and niece, Cyndee Pekar.

His is preceded in death by his loving wife, Nadine (nee Dagon) Vershay; his parents, John J. Vershay and Evelyn (nee Brozovich) Vershay-Reeves; his step-father, D. Hubert Reeves; his father and mother-in-law, Andrew and Mary (Budzinski) Dagon; brother-in-law, Ed Pekar; and sister-in-law, Verna Mae Pekar.

Visitation for John S. Vershay will be Friday, May 3, 2024 from, 4-8 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black (at Essington) Rd., Joliet. Funeral services will be Saturday, May 4, 2024 beginning at the funeral home chapel at 9:00 a.m., then processing to St Anne Catholic Church in Crest Hill for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville.

 In lieu of flowers, memorials in John’s name to Lightways Hospice would be appreciated.
