Obituary of Herman F. Sommer
Herman F. Sommer, age 81, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 30, 2024, at the Lightways Hospice Home in Joliet. Herman was born on July 8, 1942, one of three children of the late Stanley and Bernice Sommer, along with brother Edward Sommer and sister Michalena Madura. He grew up in Chicago and was a graduate of Lane Tech High School. Herman worked for over 35 years for A.B. Dick, then another 10 years for Precision Packaging before retiring and settling in Shorewood. He enjoyed bowling and fishing, playing 16 inch softball, and the “occasional” cold beer, but most of all, he was dedicated to his family, and enjoyed time spent with them.
Herman is survived by his three children, Vince (Johna) Sommer, Stacey (Daryl) Sladek, and Nicole (Brent) Fentem; his grandchildren, Brayden, Brianna and Brooke Sommer, Danielle Winnan, Zach (Katelyn) Sladek, Gabrielle (Garrett) Roberts, and Cole Fentem; and his great grandchildren, Luke, Tristan, Jaxson, and Henry.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, JoAnn (nee Gullo) Sommer.
Visitation for Herman F. Sommer will be Tuesday, July 2, 2024, from 4-8 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Rd., Joliet. Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 3, 2024, beginning at the funeral home chapel at 9:15 a.m., then processing to Holy Family Catholic Church,600 N. Brookforest Dr., Shorewood, for Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in River Grove.
