Doug and I grew up together in Joliet near Reedswood and Dirksen schools. We played a lot of sports together in the neighborhood. One funny story is when Doug wanted to have a rock throwing fight with each other. I tried to talk him out of it but he insisted. So we threw rocks at each other playing war games. I picked up a small flat skipping rock and winged it at Doug and it bounced off the top of his head. It made a loud noise and drew some blood and he went down for the count. That was the end of the rock war. After Doug regrouped, we laughed about how dumb it was and went off and had some other good clean fun in the neighborhood. I will always have fond memories of Doug. Doug was my Sigma Chi pledge son at the University of Illinois. I feel blessed to have known such a energetic, charismatic, and caring person - one I'm truly proud to call Brother. Although my heart aches at the present time, the countless memories will always brighten the past, and I know an amazing reunion awaits in the future. God Speed Doug. Soar high with the Angel. What an amazing life & journey. I'm glad the part about student-teaching at St. John's was included. I remember this larger than life person on our playground joining in the dodgeball and football games. Students were just attracted to Doug. Not surprised to see all he accomplished in life. My heartfelt condolences to Mom Sasso, Karen, Sheila, Cindy and the rest of the family. This is one of the saddest periods of my entire life to lose my lifelong best friend (since 1st grade). I feel a tidal wave of sorrow.
