John Mezera

Obituary of John Michael Mezera

John Michael Mezera, age 74, passed away on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Lightways Hospice. He was born and raised in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, and was a graduate of Marquette University School of Engineering.

After graduation, John proudly served his country in the United States Army for four years and thereafter became employed with the City of Joliet as a civil engineer. He was promoted to the Director of Public Works and eventually served as City Manager of Joliet from 1987 until retirement in 2008.

During retirement, John enjoyed golfing, attending Badger football games with lifelong friends, and driving through Europe on family vacations. He was known as a very knowledgeable helpful friend and neighbor, always willing to share his time and expertise with others. His British cousin describes him as a “giant of a man”.

John is survived by his loving wife, Kate (Noel); son Nicholas; two brothers, Robert (Sun) Mezera of Fayettville, NC, and Michael Mezera of Prairie du Chien, WI; sister, Janice (Michael) O’Malley of Lake Villa, IL; brothers-in-law, Larry Long of Lansing, IA, Richard (Cindy) Noel of Prairie du Chien, WI, and Robert Noel of Prairie du Chien, WI; sisters-in-law, Sheila (Mike) Conway of La Crosse, WI, Janice (Wayne) Koecke of Prairie du Chien, WI, Bridgitt (Ken Pangburn) Noel of Apple Valley, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Irene (Whysall) Mezera; his sister, Arlene Long; sister-in-law, Kayla Mezera; and niece Kristine Williams.

The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to Lightways Hospice for their expert care and kindness.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name to Lightways Hospice would be appreciated.

As it was his request, cremation rites have been accorded and private services will be held.
