We were so sorry to hear of Jim's death. His name brings back so many happy memories of the band program all of our children were involved in at Laraway School. Jim did so much for the music program at Laraway. He was an inspiration to all his students. We were so fortunate to have had him as our band director. Our prayers go out to Jim and his family.

I was very saddened to hear of Mr. Biro's passing. I have many fond memories of him from when I was a student at Laraway. He was my first band director and he gave me my first few oboe lessons. I still remember when he helped me and my parents pick out my first oboe. He was a deeply caring and devoted teacher who had a true gift for making learning an engaging experience and for helping each and everyone of us realize that we had the ability to achieve whatever goals we set for ourselves. He was the first person who recognized that I had a spark of talent; and he had a way of making us all feel as though we were special in our own individual ways. While he nearly ALWAYS had a smile on his face and he frequently made me laugh, he took his job as band director very seriously. He taught us discipline and to always try our best. He inspired us to rise to our full potential.
I have thought about Mr. Biro many times over the years. I now teach and play professionally in the Kansas City area. I sometimes ruminate on how my life may have turned out differently if he hadn't recognized that spark and shared with us all his passion for music. It has been this passion of his that has stayed with me all these years, and that I suspect will always be a part of me.
My deepest sympathies go to his family in this difficult time. May he rest in peace.

Mr. Biro.
In 1973, I was a new student at Laraway School. I followed my new friends to the band room one day and you introduced yourself, asking me (before I could say hello) what instrument I wished to play. Tongue tied and very nervous, I chose the flute. You loaned me yours right on the spot until my folks were able to purchase one for me a few weeks later. That is where my love of music began. You introduced me to Bach, Mozart, Cohan, Rimsky-Korsakov, Led Zeppelin, Chicago, David Bowie, Elton John, The Who (I could go on an on). You taught me about these brilliant artists and composers with such admiration, respect, love and intensity. In music class when a song embellished your spirit (which was often), you would close your eyes (with dark glasses in tow) and would move your head in rhythm, feeling every beat, note and intonation. You and that song became intertwined in the universe.
To this day when ever I hear David Bowie sing the lyrics "Ground control to Major Tom..." I think of you. As I told my Facebook friends tonight (many are pals from Laraway), I am sad you are not on earth any more. However, your spirit is and will always be -- because you are rocket man!
XO

Jim was a caring, loving human being. A man of many talents, he thought of others first and foremost. He was a five-star musician who brought his expertise into the classroom. I considered him a friend for nearly 50 years. Jim now resides in heaven with our heavenly father for all eternity. Rest in peace, my friend.
