We were so sorry to hear of Jim's death. His name brings back so many happy memories of the band program all of our children were involved in at Laraway School. Jim did so much for the music program at Laraway. He was an inspiration to all his students. We were so fortunate to have had him as our band director. Our prayers go out to Jim and his family.
Mr. Biro.
In 1973, I was a new student at Laraway School. I followed my new friends to the band room one day and you introduced yourself, asking me (before I could say hello) what instrument I wished to play. Tongue tied and very nervous, I chose the flute. You loaned me yours right on the spot until my folks were able to purchase one for me a few weeks later. That is where my love of music began. You introduced me to Bach, Mozart, Cohan, Rimsky-Korsakov, Led Zeppelin, Chicago, David Bowie, Elton John, The Who (I could go on an on). You taught me about these brilliant artists and composers with such admiration, respect, love and intensity. In music class when a song embellished your spirit (which was often), you would close your eyes (with dark glasses in tow) and would move your head in rhythm, feeling every beat, note and intonation. You and that song became intertwined in the universe.
To this day when ever I hear David Bowie sing the lyrics "Ground control to Major Tom..." I think of you. As I told my Facebook friends tonight (many are pals from Laraway), I am sad you are not on earth any more. However, your spirit is and will always be -- because you are rocket man!

Jim was a thoughtful, intelligent, talented musician and teacher who was an excellent leader of our Phi Mu Alpha music fraternity at EIU. He was at true friend who cared about others. And, he knew how to have fun! He will be badly missed.
May the depth of your faith and the love of those who share your loss comfort you at this time of sadness.
Jim is in the Arms of Jesus with no more pain and suffering. His spirit and memories will forever remain
with his devoted and loving wife and family and friends.
JIm and Jae are loved dearly. They have a very special place in my heart for many years. And I know Our Lord
has special places in Heaven for them. They have surely earned them.
Loads of love and prayers,
Carlene Gerlich
